ABOUT US

Meet The Trainer

My name is Tammy Smith and I am the owner of Pawsitive K9 Trainer. After graduating from Washburn University in 1999 with a psychology degree, I returned to the Kansas City area and worked at a veterinary hospital starting in 2001. While working in the hospital, I met two dog trainers who re-ignited my love of dogs and mentored me by providing their seasoned knowledge. After my time at the vet hospital, I went on to study under Dennis Bastian, one of the Midwest’s premier dog trainers. I also earned my title of Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed. (CPDT-KA).

I have been a dog lover my whole life and was inspired to start my own business, Pawsitive Transport, in 2010. That business slowly evolved into Pawsitive K9 Trainer. I  worked with Dennis Bastian for over a year-long apprenticeship prior to going out on my own. I also worked for a week-long intense study with a national trainer, Nicole Skeehan owner of Philly Unleashed. My passion to help other people and their dogs was inspired by certifying two dogs for Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and certified one dog as a R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog). I am also a member of the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW). I also am certified to give the Canine Good Citizen test by the AKC.  I am passionate about helping dogs and their owners improve communication and build a better bond between them.  I am a certified trainer by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. You may visit the site to assure you of my credentials. (ccpdt.org)

Testimonials

Valerie Chaney

"I have had our yellow lab puppy in Tammys' training classes and love her classes and the way she trains the human as well as the puppy. Even after the class, she is available to ask and help with any questions/issues that have come about. She goes above and behind to help with any issues that may arise even after classes/training is over. I very strongly would recommend her to anyone/everyone in need of dog training service or behavior issue advice. Thank you Tammy for all your help. Very much appreciated!!"

Courtney Shaw

"Tammy was amazing! Not only did she help us train Birdie, but she also gave us a foundation on what to expect as Birdie grows. She encouraged us and took her time at each lesson to confirm we were comfortable with each step of the process. Birdie was thrilled to meet her every visit- especially once she realized she always carried treats. :)"

Patty Herron

"Our puppy training experience with Tammy was excellent. She's so easy to work with and is very knowledgeable... My puppy responded to and connected with her immediately. In addition to the hands-on training, she also is a great resource for tips and advice... I highly recommend her!! She's the best!"
